If you’ve been the type of person who loves getting tattoos because you feel more confident and empowered by them, the question, “Are tattoos a disgrace to the Japanese culture?” might have crossed your mind.

The short answer is not necessarily! You can go on and enjoy your getaway to witness the beauty of Mount Fuji even when you have different tattoos on your entire body! Chances are, you would only need to cover them up should you decide to try public hot springs or onsen baths.

Fortunately, Mount Fuji also has a couple of tattoo-friendly ryokans so that you can experience the complete package of a Japanese vacation. And to help you even further, this guide zooms in on the best of these traditional inns for your next trip to Mount Fuji!

1. Fuji Onsenji Yumedono

First on the list might also be the most luxurious – but it’s worth it! Fuji Onsenji Yumedono promises stunning panoramic views of Mount Fuji, regardless of your preferred room. If you’re willing to pay extra, suites with in-room gardens and hot springs are also available. We highly recommend reserving the private onsen bath if you have tattoos!

Fuji Onsenji Yumedono also boasts a convenient location. Kawaguchiko Train Station is merely a five-minute drive, and you can easily reach Oishi Park and Nagasaki Parks by cab (for only 10 minutes!).

If you plan to visit this ryokan, don’t miss out on the traditional Japanese cuisine for your breakfast. The staff serves the meal in the ryokan’s cultural dining area. You should also try the multi-course dinner, with different local specialties made from the finest Japanese ingredients.

Rooms at Yamadaya Hotel also boast lake and mountain views. Although there are no private bathrooms, the shared ones are large enough to accommodate multiple guests at a time.

If you’re planning to reserve a room at Yamadaya Hotel, get the rate with a complimentary breakfast meal. You get to experience kaiseki dishes made from local Japanese ingredients. 3. Fujikawaguchiko Onsen Konanso Hotel

Fujikawaguchiko Onsen Konanso Hotel is a five-star ryokan that combines modern architecture with historical Japanese interiors. This Japanese-style hotel offers guests an ultimate traditional experience with tatami floors, futon beds, and authentic local cuisine.

Fujikawaguchiko Onsen Konanso Hotel features public and private onsens. If you have tattoos, we suggest reserving the private hot spring bath so you don’t have to cover anything up. While this ryokan is tattoo-friendly with the private onsens, guests with tattoos are discouraged from heading to the communal hot springs. Don’t forget to cover your tattoos if you still prefer to do so.

Hotel Asafuji offers one of the best kaiseki breakfasts and dinners, which are included in each reservation. If you’re booking a room here, go for those with private onsen baths and beautiful Mt. Fuji views. This ryokan also has a public hot spring. You can also dip in there for a swim, but you must cover your tattoos. You can ask for cover sheets from the front desk.

With 125 guest rooms, this modern ryokan hotel combines comfort and style. It features a spacious garden that also serves as a shared lounge, where you can sip coffee or tea while interacting with other guests.

What makes Hotel Kaneyamaen interesting is the Taiko or the Japanese drums show, where artists perform every night at exactly 8:30 pm. The show does not accept reservations, so you’re encouraged to eat dinner earlier if you want to catch the best seats in front.

Public hot springs at Hotel Kaneyamaen feature highly alkaline natural water. However, while the entire hotel is tattoo-friendly, you cannot join any public onsens, even with cover-ups. But Hotel Kaneyamaen has a room with a private open-air bath you can book so you don’t have to feel ashamed of your tattoos.
