Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island, is famous for its stunning snow-covered landscapes, breathtaking wilderness, and majestic mountains. A trip here isn’t complete without experiencing a skiing adventure. But what if you could combine that with the ultimate relaxation?
Imagine yourself soaking in a private onsen at a beautiful ryokan, watching the snow gently fall outside. Sounds like a dream, right? To help make that dream a reality, we’ve compiled a list of the best ryokans in Hokkaido with private onsen. These traditional guesthouses offer the perfect blend of comfort, culture, and serenity.
1. Hotel Neu Schloss Otaru
Let’s start with one of the most luxurious ryokans in Hokkaido. Hotel Neu Schloss Otaru, which means “New Castle” in German, sits on a hilltop overlooking Otaru. From the rooms, you’ll enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Sea of Japan.
Each room at Hotel Neu Schloss Otaru blends European and Japanese styles and features a private open-air hot tub (rotenburo) on the terrace. For an unforgettable dining experience, visit Blau Kuste, the hotel’s on-site restaurant, which serves some of the finest French cuisine in Hokkaido. If you opt for a standard room, you can still enjoy the indoor and outdoor public onsen, which are sourced from Asarigawa Onsen.
The hotel also features excellent restaurants serving Japanese, Chinese, and Western cuisine. We recommend booking a stay with a buffet breakfast included—you won’t be disappointed! This is an excellent summer retreat thanks to its heated pools, but it’s equally perfect in winter for snow sports.
